Foundation for oily skin

Picking the right foundation for oily skin can be a big challenge for women (and possibly men!). Just like with the cleansing and moisturizing products, the key here is to narrow your choices down to a few different foundations and test them out to find out which one works best with your skin.

Using a foundation that isn’t working well with your skin could harm the condition of your skin in the long run.

Because of how active the oily skin type is throughout the day, people with oily skin tend to find it hard to keep a consistent look with their makeup throughout the day. Some foundations tend to form patches as the day goes on.

Try to avoid

  • Avoid foundations that contain bismuth oxychloride and dimethicone. These are pore-clogging agents and that is not what looking for.
  • Avoid foundations that contain oil from petroleum.
  • Avoid foundations that contain alcohol (just like with the cleansing products)
  • Don’t apply the foundation to your face using your fingers! This will just transfer more oil onto your face.
  • Don’t apply too much foundation.
  • Don’t pick a foundation based how good they look on other people. Different skin types yield different results.

Recommendations

makeup

  • Apply the foundations to your face using a makeup sponge.
  • Apply a thin layer of foundation only. Not only will this leave you looking better, it will make your foundation last longer!
  • Use a foundation a shade lighter than what you would expect to use. The oil on skin causes the foundation to look darker once applied.
  • The foundation should include kaolin clay, which helps absorb oil.
  • Foundations that contain titanium dioxide protect your skin from the sun.
  • If the foundation contains serecite then it helps minimize the appearance of large pores and helps absorb oil.
  • Water based foundation is recommended.

The recommendations are just for your guidance. Remember to try a few different foundations out, you’ll never know how well one may work with your skin unless you try it!

Here are some examples of foundations that I like:

  • Bourjois Mineral Matte Mousse Foundation This has been getting great reviews from people with oily skin. It’s a bit too thick for people in hot climates or with extremely oily skin but on average it does a great job.
  • Revlon Colorstay is frequently recommended so it may be worth trying out however it does contain some undesirable ingredients such as dimethicone.

Although we all have different skin and the best foundation for you might not be the same as the best foundation for me, I would still like to know what works well with other people. I am 28 & have had really oily skin since my early teens. I have experimented with loads of products in my time but have concluded the following to be the best for me:
Neutrogena SOS cleanser (it seems to be discontinued in the UK so I’ve been buying it online recently)

Kiehl’s Rare Earth range is great – I use the mask, the facial wash & the pore minimising lotion.

I also use blotting papers throughout the day – the best ones I can find in the UK are actually Superdrug’s own brand. I get through LOADS of these & don’t go anywhere without them. Clean & Clear also make some, as do Avon & Clinique, but I find the Superdrug ones are the best for me.

I always make sure my pillowcase is clean – this makes a real difference :-)

Foundation wise – Maxfactor’s Facefinity is my preferred choice.

Lastly, when I run out of my Kiehl’s products (& I haven’t got around to getting any more yet!) I use Clean & Clear’s daily exfoliator (in the light blue tube) – mild enough for every day use but still thoroughly cleans the face. Also, Simple’s Light moisturiser is what I use when I’ve run out of my Kiehl’s Rare Earth lotion, & I tend to use it as a substitute once or twice a week regardless just to stop the Kiehl’s product drying my skin.

Tip – if using Kiehl’s Rare Earth Pore Minimising Lotion, gently pat it onto the face (this will stop make up from flaking when it is applied)

Lastly, I was prescribed Roaccutane (containing Isotretinoin) a few years back by a dermatologist (as my fight against oily skin & acne was a losing one whilst I was a teenager!) and despite some of the pretty nasty side effects they warn you this drug may cause, it did wonders for my skin! I was thrilled with the results – acne completely gone & I barely needed to use blotting papers to remove surface oil as there wasn’t really any! Of course I was a bit of a moody cow, getting quite short tempered at times but this is a known side effect of the drug. My lips & eyes were really dry, & I developed small dry patches on my legs but nothing a decent moisturiser couldn’t handle. Unfortunately, after treatment had ended, slowly my skin has returned to be as oil as before but I manage it now with my routine as described earlier (blotting papers are my biggest saviour!) but the acne has not returned :-) I’ve had the odd break-out but nothing to speak of really (& this has only happened when my GP changed the contraceptive pill I was on so the break-out was probably due to that)

Oily skin can be a blessing is disguise, & if you find the right products & right routine to suit you then you’ll probably find the ageing process won’t be so noticeable. I’m 28 but people often think I’m about 18, & my mum (who I’ve inherited my oily skin from!) definitely looks younger than she actually is!

Wow, thanks for the huge comment Laura. It seems like your experimenting has really paid off. I think trial and error is definitely the way forward.

I hear plenty about Roaccutane and to be honest, I didn’t dare go ahead with the treatment. Some side effects are really nasty and although I wasn’t really happy with my skin, it wasn’t ruining my life or anything. I’m glad to see it worked out well for you though!

You’ve mentioned some products here that I’ve not used yet so they can go on my huge list of “things to try out”. There are a billion products out there and I always have a feeling that one of them might work wonders on my skin. You can never really know without trying them, but that’s pretty much impossible!
